Thomas Jerome Westley Gable was born in Gastonia, North Carolina on December 30, 1928. As the son of an entertainer he got a feel for the performing arts at an early age. By the age of nine he was already performing for the local residents of his community. After serving in the military, he landed the job as guitar player for the late Madame Edna Gallmon Cooke. It was while playing for Madame Cooke that he was given the nickname "Guitar Gable" for his entertaining antics on the guitar. When Mdm Cooke signed on to the NASHBORO record label Mr.Gable met the producer Jay D. Miller. While recording "Heavy Load He'll Fix It" Mr. Gable stated that Miller then hired him to tour as "Guitar Gable". Although this was an unscrupulous transaction since Gabriel Perrodin was "The Guitar Gable" of the EXCELLO Recordings, Mr. Gable accepted the offer and was sent back to the Carolina area to tour as Guitar Gable. According to Mr. Gable the pseudonym "Jerry West" that was used by Mr. Miller was taken from Gable's middle names "Jerome Westley" and was supposed to represent Mr. Gable on the copyrights. When asking any of the Carolina artist of that era Mr. Gables story was confirmed by them that he indeed was performing as Guitar Gable as far back as 1954 and did in fact go by that name even as early as 1947 while playing in night clubs while stationed in Germany with the Army. Mr. Perrodin would not have been privilege to the information of such an agreement and therefore refutes all claims by the now deceased Gable. Still to much of the United States, Thomas Gable was the man that they saw perform when they went to see Guitar Gable perform. With the demise of both Mr. Gable and Mr. Miller the truth of the legend will remain with the participants.
During his 50 year music career he has played for the President of the United States Jimmy Carter and shared the stage with many of the industry's greatest entertainers including: Ruth Brown, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Charles Brown, Bo Didley, Della Reese, Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Muddy Waters and many more.
